Overview
Moving from Tall Emu CRM to Mailchimp is a platform-type migration, not a CRM-to-CRM migration. Mailchimp is an email marketing platform; Tall Emu is a full-stack CRM covering sales, inventory, manufacturing, and freight. The only meaningful data overlap is Contacts and Company names. We export Contacts from Tall Emu's grid views, map Company to a Mailchimp Tag or merge field, and import into the target audience. Every other Tall Emu object — Pipelines, Deals, Quotes, Orders, Subscriptions, Products with inventory attributes, Activities, and Custom Fields — has no direct Mailchimp equivalent and is documented as a manual-rebuild item post-migration. Tall Emu automations do not migrate. Mailchimp's own automation builder must be reconstructed by the customer's admin. The financial motivation is straightforward: Tall Emu charges $95 per user per month billed annually plus a $3,500 onboarding fee; Mailchimp's free tier covers up to 500 subscribers and paid plans start at $13 per month, making this attractive for teams that use Tall Emu primarily for email list management rather than its full CRM depth.
Every standard and custom field arrives verified.
AI proposes the map; you confirm before any record moves.
Parent–child, lookups, and ownership stay linked.
Calls, emails, meetings — with original timestamps.
Documents, uploads, and inline notes move with the record.

Object mapping
Each row shows how a Tall Emu CRM object lands in Mailchimp, including any object-level transformations, lookup resolution, or schema-design dependencies.
Typical mapping — final map is confirmed during the sample migration step.
Tall Emu CRM
Contact
Mailchimp
Subscriber
1:1Tall Emu Contact records map to Mailchimp Subscribers within a target Audience. We export Contacts from Tall Emu's grid view using the column chooser to include all standard fields (First Name, Last Name, Email, Phone, Role, Address). Email address serves as the Mailchimp subscriber key for deduplication. Any Contact without a valid email address is held in a reconciliation queue. Standard merge fields (FNAME, LNAME, PHONE, ADDRESS) map directly; additional Tall Emu fields map to custom Mailchimp merge fields pre-created during scoping.
Tall Emu CRM
Company
Mailchimp
Tag or Merge Field
1:1Tall Emu Company records provide the company name, industry, and billing address. We use the company name as a Mailchimp Tag applied to all Contacts linked to that Company record. Industry maps to a custom merge field if the Tall Emu Industry field is populated. The Company billing address is appended to the Contact's address merge fields where available. Companies without linked Contacts are noted as orphaned and require manual review for Mailchimp audience import.
Tall Emu CRM
Product
Mailchimp
Not Migrated
lossyTall Emu Products carry SKU, pricing tiers, stock on hand, serial number tracking, BOM structures, and reorder points. Mailchimp has no product catalog object. We export the full product inventory as a written product catalog document in CSV and Excel format for the customer's admin to reference in Mailchimp manually or to integrate with a dedicated e-commerce or inventory tool post-migration. BOM and serial number data is outside Mailchimp's scope entirely.
Tall Emu CRM
Pipeline / Deal
Mailchimp
Not Migrated
lossyTall Emu Pipelines and Deals have no Mailchimp equivalent. Mailchimp does not support opportunity records, deal stages, probabilities, or pipeline management. We export the full pipeline structure (pipeline names, stage names, stage order, probabilities) and all open and closed Deal records as a CSV inventory. The customer's admin reviews this inventory and decides whether to document pipeline health externally or move pipeline tracking to a dedicated CRM as a separate project.
Tall Emu CRM
Quote
Mailchimp
Not Migrated
lossyTall Emu Quotes contain line items, pricing, terms, and acceptance status. Mailchimp does not have a quoting object. We export Quote records as a separate CSV inventory (Quote ID, Contact name, total value, status, date) for manual reference. PDF attachments and template styling do not transfer. Quote status values (Draft, Sent, Accepted, Declined) are documented for the customer's admin to recreate as tags or segments in Mailchimp if needed for reporting.
Tall Emu CRM
Order / Invoice
Mailchimp
Not Migrated
lossyTall Emu Orders and Invoices carry line items, quantities, pricing, fulfillment status, and payment records linked to Xero or MYOB integration. Mailchimp has no order or invoice object. We export a full order and invoice inventory as CSV for the customer's finance team. Historical paid invoice data is preserved for record-keeping but has no Mailchimp workflow use case. Payment status and terms are documented as a manual reference for reconciliation.
Tall Emu CRM
Subscription
Mailchimp
Tag or Segment
1:1Tall Emu Subscriptions have Plan, Status, Billable Quantity, Price, Period, and Renewal Due Date. These map to Mailchimp Tags applied to the Subscriber record. Active subscriptions become a 'Active Subscriber' tag; expired subscriptions become an 'Expired' tag. Plan name and period map to custom merge fields. Billable quantity and price are informational only since Mailchimp does not have a subscription billing cycle engine. Renewal due dates are noted in a custom merge field for segmentation purposes.
Tall Emu CRM
Activity (Call, Email, Meeting, Task)
Mailchimp
Not Migrated
lossyTall Emu Activity records include meetings, calls, emails, and tasks with assignees, due dates, and completion status. Mailchimp does not support activity logging or task management. We export a summary of activity counts per Contact (total calls, total emails, last meeting date) as a custom merge field in Mailchimp. The full activity log is not migratable. The customer's admin rebuilds any task management workflow in a dedicated project management tool separate from Mailchimp.
Tall Emu CRM
Custom Fields
Mailchimp
Merge Fields
1:1Tall Emu custom fields on Contacts (and the subset of modules that support them) map to Mailchimp merge fields where Mailchimp supports the data type. Text, number, date, and email custom fields map cleanly to TEXT, NUMBER, DATE, and EMAIL merge field types. Multi-select or multi-checkbox custom fields map to Mailchimp TEXT merge fields as comma-separated values. Dropdown and radio custom fields map to Mailchimp dropdown merge fields. Any Tall Emu custom field on a module without a Mailchimp equivalent (e.g., custom fields on Products or Orders) is documented separately and not migrated.

Gotchas + challenges
Platform-specific issues from each side, plus the pair-specific challenges that don't show up on either platform's page on its own.
Tall Emu CRM gotchas
Mandatory upfront annual billing plus onboarding fee
No documented public REST API for bulk migration
Integration with MYOB and Xero is native but brittle in practice
Custom fields not available on all modules
Workflow automations do not survive migration
Mailchimp gotchas
Contact count includes unsubscribed and non-subscribed records
Automation workflows cannot be exported
Account suspensions trigger silently during migration
Template HTML is Mailchimp-specific and may not render in other platforms
E-commerce data requires active store connection
Pair-specific challenges
Migration approach
Discovery and migration scope definition
We audit Tall Emu's active modules: Contacts, Companies, Products, Pipelines, Deals, Quotes, Orders, Subscriptions, Activities, and Custom Fields. We identify which modules have valid email addresses for Mailchimp import (Contacts only) and which are outside Mailchimp's scope entirely. We also audit the existing Tall Emu Mailchimp integration if active, to understand which records were previously synced. The discovery output is a written scope document that lists every migratable object, every non-migratable object, and a merge field creation checklist for the customer's Mailchimp admin to complete before the data import phase begins.
Merge field pre-creation in Mailchimp
Before any data export, we create the required Mailchimp merge fields in the target Audience. Standard fields (FNAME, LNAME, EMAIL, PHONE, ADDRESS) are available by default. We create custom merge fields for Tall Emu custom fields that map cleanly: company name as a Tag, industry as a dropdown merge field, plan name and renewal date as TEXT and DATE fields, and activity summary counts as NUMBER fields. If the target Mailchimp plan limits merge fields to fewer than the count required, we flag this during scoping and prioritize the highest-value fields for import.
Excel export and data extraction from Tall Emu
We export Contacts from Tall Emu's grid view using the column chooser to include all required standard fields and any migratable custom fields. We export the Company grid separately to capture company name and industry for the tag mapping. Tall Emu exports everything visible in the current grid view, so we work with the customer's admin to configure the grid layout before export to ensure all needed columns are present. Export includes all records in the current view; filters can be applied to export a specific subset if needed.
Data transformation and deduplication
We transform the exported Contacts into Mailchimp import format: First Name, Last Name, Email, and any additional fields mapped to merge field tags. Company name is extracted and written as a Tag applied to each Contact. Subscriptions are mapped to status Tags (Active, Expired) with plan and renewal date in merge fields. Duplicate records are identified by email address and consolidated using a customer-defined rule (keep most recent, keep oldest, or merge all values). Records without a valid email address are flagged and held in a separate queue for manual review.
Test import and reconciliation
We run a test import of a sample of 50-100 records into a Mailchimp test Audience to verify merge field mapping, tag application, and address formatting. The customer's admin reviews the test results and confirms mapping accuracy before the full import begins. Any corrections to merge field names, tag names, or data formatting are applied to the transform before the production import. This step prevents a full import with incorrect field mappings, which would require a second import to correct.
Production import and final handoff
We run the full Contact import into the production Mailchimp Audience using the verified mapping. The import emits a row-count reconciliation report: total imported, total skipped (no email), total deduped. We deliver the non-migratable object inventories (Pipelines, Deals, Products, Quotes, Orders, Subscriptions, Activities) as separate CSV files with a readme explaining each object and its Mailchimp gap. We deliver the automation rebuild guide documenting each Tall Emu workflow with a recommended Mailchimp customer journey equivalent. We do not rebuild automations inside the migration scope.
