Overview
Smarketing Cloud and Mailchimp occupy different positions on the marketing stack spectrum, and that gap shapes what can migrate. Smarketing Cloud bundles CRM contacts, companies, deal pipelines, and marketing automation under one subscription; Mailchimp is primarily an email marketing platform whose core record is the Subscriber within an Audience. We extract contacts and campaign membership data from Smarketing Cloud via UI-based exports and custom ETL since no public API exists, then reimport them into Mailchimp as subscribers with the relevant tag applied per campaign enrollment. Companies, Pipelines, Custom Objects, and Automation Workflows have no Mailchimp equivalent and are documented for manual rebuild rather than migrated. We do not migrate Smarketing Cloud workflows, sequences, or automation logic; Mailchimp's automation builder requires manual reconstruction using the written inventory we deliver.
Every standard and custom field arrives verified.
AI proposes the map; you confirm before any record moves.
Parent–child, lookups, and ownership stay linked.
Calls, emails, meetings — with original timestamps.
Documents, uploads, and inline notes move with the record.

Object mapping
Each row shows how a Smarketing Cloud object lands in Mailchimp, including any object-level transformations, lookup resolution, or schema-design dependencies.
Typical mapping — final map is confirmed during the sample migration step.
Smarketing Cloud
Contact
Mailchimp
Subscriber (Audience member)
1:1Smarketing Cloud Contact records with valid email addresses migrate as Mailchimp Subscribers in the designated Audience. Standard fields (first name, last name, email, phone) map to Mailchimp merge fields (FNAME, LNAME, EMAIL, PHONE). Lifecycle stage from Smarketing Cloud migrates as a tag on the subscriber (e.g., tag: lifecycle:customer) for segmentation in Mailchimp. Records without a valid email address are held in a reconciliation list for the customer to resolve before import.
Smarketing Cloud
Company
Mailchimp
Merge fields or Tags
lossyMailchimp has no native company object. Company name from Smarketing Cloud maps to a Mailchimp merge field (COMPANY) and a tag (company:acme-corp) per subscriber. If the customer requires rich company-contact linkage, we recommend establishing a Mailchimp integration with a CRM connector (e.g., HubSpot CRM sync, Salesforce Mailchimp integration) post-migration to maintain the relationship. Company address, industry, and custom fields map to additional merge fields or are documented as manual data to populate in the CRM connector.
Smarketing Cloud
Campaign
Mailchimp
Campaign + automation tag
1:1Smarketing Cloud Campaign records are recreated in Mailchimp as Campaigns (for one-time sends) or Automation workflows (for triggered or drip sequences). Campaign membership records determine which subscribers receive which tag. Each contact enrolled in a Smarketing Cloud Campaign receives a corresponding tag in Mailchimp (e.g., campaign:spring-promo) to preserve enrollment history. Active and paused campaign status in Smarketing Cloud does not transfer; campaigns are created in Draft or active state in Mailchimp at the customer's discretion.
Smarketing Cloud
Campaign membership
Mailchimp
Tag on Subscriber
lossySmarketing Cloud records which contacts were enrolled in which campaigns and when. We export the full campaign-contact membership list, then apply tags to the corresponding Mailchimp subscribers. The enrollment date migrates as a custom merge field (e.g., ENROLLDATE_2024) or as part of the tag string (campaign:spring-promo:2024-03-15) depending on the customer's segmentation needs. A subscriber can carry multiple campaign tags, preserving the full enrollment history.
Smarketing Cloud
Tag
Mailchimp
Tag
1:1Tags applied to Smarketing Cloud Contacts and Companies migrate as Mailchimp Tags on the corresponding subscribers. We export all distinct tag strings, map them to Mailchimp tag format, and apply them in bulk during import. Tags that reference Smarketing Cloud-specific concepts (e.g., pipeline stage or owner) are preserved as tags with a prefix (e.g., owner:jane-doe, stage:qualified) and flagged for the customer to review for relevance in Mailchimp.
Smarketing Cloud
Automation Workflow
Mailchimp
Customer Journey (manual rebuild)
lossySmarketing Cloud Automation Workflows are documented in a written inventory we deliver to the customer, including trigger conditions, filter criteria, action sequence, and timing logic. Mailchimp Customer Journeys use a different trigger-action model and must be rebuilt manually or with Mailchimp's Journey Builder. We do not migrate workflow logic as code. The inventory document maps each Smarketing Cloud workflow to a recommended Mailchimp Journey configuration.
Smarketing Cloud
Email Template
Mailchimp
Email Template
1:1Smarketing Cloud Email Template HTML content exports with variable placeholders. We extract the HTML and remap placeholder syntax to Mailchimp merge field format (e.g., {{first_name}} becomes *|FNAME|*). CSS inlining and responsive template structure are preserved during remapping. Templates with complex conditional content (branching logic) are documented for manual rebuild in Mailchimp's template editor because Mailchimp's conditional merge field syntax differs from Smarketing Cloud's.
Smarketing Cloud
Pipeline and Deal
Mailchimp
Not migratable
lossySmarketing Cloud Pipelines and Deals have no Mailchimp equivalent. Mailchimp is an email marketing platform, not a CRM, and does not include opportunity management, deal stages, or revenue tracking. We flag pipeline and deal records as not migratable and present them to the customer during scoping. If the customer requires pipeline tracking post-migration, we recommend a separate CRM migration or integration with a CRM platform alongside the Mailchimp setup.

Gotchas + challenges
Platform-specific issues from each side, plus the pair-specific challenges that don't show up on either platform's page on its own.
Smarketing Cloud gotchas
No public API documentation or developer portal
Proprietary data format with no bulk export format documented
Performance bottlenecks during high-volume campaign sends
Limited historical data export for record history
Mailchimp gotchas
Contact count includes unsubscribed and non-subscribed records
Automation workflows cannot be exported
Account suspensions trigger silently during migration
Template HTML is Mailchimp-specific and may not render in other platforms
E-commerce data requires active store connection
Pair-specific challenges
Migration approach
Discovery and export feasibility assessment
We audit the Smarketing Cloud account for available export options, record counts (Contacts, Campaigns, Campaign memberships, Tags), and data completeness. Since no public API exists, we confirm what the UI-based export produces, whether it includes all required fields, and whether bulk export is possible in a single operation or requires multi-step extraction. We identify any records without valid email addresses (which cannot migrate to Mailchimp), any custom fields that need merge field creation in Mailchimp, and any campaign membership data requiring tag reconstruction.
Mailchimp audience and schema preparation
We create the Mailchimp Audience with the appropriate merge fields mapped from Smarketing Cloud Contact properties. We configure tag categories and prefixes for campaign membership tags (e.g., campaign:, lifecycle:, owner:). If company data needs preservation, we add a COMPANY merge field and document the tagging strategy. We create suppression lists from any bounced, unsubscribed, or spam-reported contacts identified in Smarketing Cloud to prevent re-import of excluded addresses.
Custom ETL pipeline development
We build a custom ETL pipeline to parse Smarketing Cloud's undocumented export format, extract Contact records with all mapped fields, and transform the data into Mailchimp-compatible CSV format. The pipeline handles tag generation from campaign membership records, company name extraction for merge field population, and date formatting for enrollment timestamp fields. We validate the ETL output against a sample of 50-100 records before running the full migration.
Sandbox import and reconciliation
We run a test import into a staging Mailchimp Audience to validate record counts, merge field population, and tag application. The customer reviews 25-50 randomly selected subscribers against the Smarketing Cloud source records to confirm accuracy. Any mapping corrections (e.g., incorrect date format, missing tag prefix, merge field name collision) are applied to the ETL pipeline before production import begins.
Production migration and delta cutover
We run the full migration into the production Mailchimp Audience. Subscribers are imported in batches with email address validation and duplicate detection. Tags are applied in a second pass, linking each subscriber to their campaign enrollment history. After initial import, we run a delta pass to catch any contacts modified or added in Smarketing Cloud during the migration window. Suppression lists are imported to ensure unsubscribed contacts are excluded from future Mailchimp sends.
Automation inventory handoff and go-live
We deliver the written workflow inventory documenting every active Smarketing Cloud Automation Workflow with its trigger conditions, filter logic, and action sequence, mapped to a recommended Mailchimp Customer Journey configuration. The customer reviews the inventory and rebuilds workflows in Mailchimp's Journey Builder. We conduct a go-live verification confirming subscriber counts, tag distribution, and suppression list accuracy in the production Mailchimp Audience. We support a one-week hypercare window for reconciliation issues; we do not rebuild workflows or configure Mailchimp automations as part of the migration scope.
