Overview

What this migration involves

Moving from GENIEE SFA/CRM to Mailchimp is a product-type transition: GENIEE bundles AdTech SSP/DSP with a secondary CRM and MA module, while Mailchimp is a dedicated email marketing platform with audience management and automation. The migration scope is narrower than a CRM-to-CRM move. We extract Contacts and Companies from GENIEE SFA/CRM, translate Japanese field labels, and import them into Mailchimp as subscribers with tags and custom fields preserving the original record context. DSP campaign performance data, SSP publisher inventory, and bid logs have no Mailchimp equivalent and are excluded from migration scope. GENIEE MA Campaign records are used to configure Mailchimp Audiences and segment logic, not migrated as a record type. We do not migrate GENIEE Workflows or automations; Mailchimp's automation model is a different architecture and those require rebuild.

Why teams make this switch

Two sides of the same decision

Leaving

GENIEE logo

GENIEE

What's pushing teams away

  • Heavy Japan focus — UI, support, documentation, and partner ecosystem are Japanese-first, so multinational teams outside Japan find it hard to operate without local support.
  • Smaller third-party integration ecosystem versus Salesforce, HubSpot, or Zoho — non-Japanese SaaS tools rarely have prebuilt connectors, so connections must be built through GENIEE's API or iPaaS.
  • Sales-led pricing and limited global price transparency make budget comparison difficult for buyers benchmarking against globally-listed CRMs.
  • Phase-based negotiation model and Japanese hearing-item conventions, while a strength domestically, are a poor fit for teams used to forecasting around US-style probability-weighted pipeline.
  • Reporting and analytics, while sufficient for the domestic Japanese market, are narrower than the BI layers of larger SFAs once teams want cross-region or product-line dashboards.

Choosing

Mailchimp logo

Mailchimp

What's pulling them in

  • Generous free tier with up to 500 contacts allows small teams to validate email marketing before committing to a paid plan.
  • Intuitive drag-and-drop email builder and 130+ templates let non-technical users produce professional campaigns without HTML or CSS knowledge.
  • 300+ native integrations, especially Canva and Shopify, make it easy to connect existing tools without custom development work.
  • Detailed open-rate, click-through, and campaign analytics give small businesses actionable insights without a dedicated marketing team.
  • One-platform consolidation of email campaigns, automations, landing pages, and ads reduces tool sprawl for lean marketing teams.

Object mapping

How GENIEE objects map to Mailchimp

Each row shows how a GENIEE object lands in Mailchimp, including any object-level transformations, lookup resolution, or schema-design dependencies.

Typical mapping — final map is confirmed during the sample migration step.

GENIEE

Contact

maps to

Mailchimp

Subscriber (Audience Member)

1:1
Fully supported

GENIEE SFA/CRM Contacts migrate to Mailchimp Subscribers within a primary Audience. We map standard fields (email, first name, last name, phone) directly. Japanese field labels on custom properties are translated during scoping and mapped to Mailchimp Merge Fields. All contacts are imported as subscribed; the customer provides a suppression list of unsubscribed contacts from GENIEE which we import before the main contact migration to prevent re-subscribing.

GENIEE

Company/Account

maps to

Mailchimp

Tags or Merge Fields on Subscriber

lossy
Fully supported

GENIEE Company records do not have a direct Mailchimp equivalent since Mailchimp operates a flat subscriber model without native Account hierarchy. We map Company name and industry to Mailchimp Merge Fields and attach Company affiliation as a Tag on each Subscriber. For organizations requiring account-level reporting in Mailchimp, we configure a custom profile field for Company and advise rebuilding account grouping logic in Mailchimp Segments.

GENIEE

Tag/Label

maps to

Mailchimp

Tag

1:1
Fully supported

GENIEE Tags and Labels on Contacts migrate directly to Mailchimp Tags. Tag vocabulary is tenant-defined and preserved as-is. Mailchimp's tag model supports multiple tags per subscriber, matching GENIEE's multi-label structure. We export tags as label arrays and map them to Mailchimp tags at import time. Tags used for lead scoring or segmentation in GENIEE MA are preserved as tags but require manual segment rebuild in Mailchimp.

GENIEE

Custom Property

maps to

Mailchimp

Merge Field

1:1
Fully supported

GENIEE SFA/CRM custom fields on Contacts migrate to Mailchimp Merge Fields within the target Audience. Field types are mapped: text fields to text merge fields, date fields to date merge fields, numeric fields to number merge fields, and checkbox or multi-select fields to either text merge fields or drop-down merge fields depending on the destination Mailchimp plan. We generate a field map during scoping and handle type conversion for any field that cannot map directly.

GENIEE

Campaign (MA)

maps to

Mailchimp

Audience Configuration

lossy
Fully supported

GENIEE MA Campaign records (campaign names, UTM parameters, source attribution) do not migrate as records to Mailchimp because Mailchimp has no campaign history import. Instead, we extract campaign metadata and use it to configure Mailchimp Audiences: default from-name, from-email, and UTM parameters are set during Mailchimp audience setup. The customer rebuilds campaign logic in Mailchimp's automation builder using this metadata as reference.

GENIEE

User/Owner

maps to

Mailchimp

Tag or Segment

1:1
Fully supported

GENIEE SFA/CRM Users assigned as record owners are extracted and mapped to Mailchimp tags or a custom Merge Field (Owner) on each Subscriber. This preserves sales team attribution for migrated records. Mailchimp has no native user management equivalent to CRM ownership, so the tag-based approach provides the closest functional analog for routing and accountability.

GENIEE

Attachment

maps to

Mailchimp

Not migrated

lossy
Fully supported

Attachments on GENIEE SFA/CRM Contacts and Companies cannot migrate to Mailchimp because Mailchimp does not support file attachments on subscriber profiles. We flag attachments during scoping and deliver a written inventory of files with record reference so the customer's admin can re-upload to a linked storage system (Google Drive, SharePoint, or a CRM integration) post-migration.

GENIEE

DSP Campaign

maps to

Mailchimp

Not migrated

lossy
Fully supported

GENIEE DSP campaigns (budget, targeting parameters, ad formats, flight dates) have no Mailchimp equivalent. Mailchimp is an email service platform, not an advertising demand-side platform. We exclude DSP campaign metadata from migration scope and deliver a written inventory of DSP campaign records with performance summaries for the customer to archive or import into a dedicated analytics tool if needed.

Pair-specific challenges

  • GENIEE has no public API for automated export

GENIEE does not publish a public REST API or developer documentation for data exports. All known export paths are manual or require direct engagement with GENIEE account management to generate data dumps. We coordinate with the GENIEE team to request CSV or database exports on behalf of the customer, which adds one to two weeks of lead time compared to platforms with documented APIs. If GENIEE account management cannot generate a bulk export, we use screen-scraping of export interfaces where accessible, which is slower and requires more validation. This is a GENIEE platform constraint that affects all migrations from this source.

  • Japanese-language field labels require manual translation

GENIEE documentation, field labels, and UI text are predominantly in Japanese. English-language aliases exist in some tiers but are not guaranteed. We engage Japanese-speaking data engineers during scoping to identify and translate field labels, extending the discovery timeline by one to two weeks compared to English-first platforms. Untranslated field labels that reach Mailchimp as merge field names will appear as garbled characters if not properly decoded from Shift-JIS or UTF-8 encoding during export. We validate encoding at export and convert to UTF-8 before Mailchimp import.

  • DSP and SSP data has no Mailchimp equivalent

GENIEE DSP campaigns and SSP publisher inventory data (bid logs, floor prices, telco/mobile/desktop slot classifications, targeting parameters) do not map to any Mailchimp object. Mailchimp is an email service platform without advertising data structures. We exclude DSP and SSP data from migration scope entirely. Organizations that need to preserve advertising performance history should export and archive DSP data separately before migration begins; we can include a written data grab from the GENIEE interface as a supplemental deliverable.

  • Mailchimp counts all contacts including unsubscribed

Mailchimp's pricing counts subscribed, unsubscribed, and non-subscribed contacts toward the billing total. Only archived, cleaned, or deleted contacts are excluded. GENIEE SFA/CRM contacts imported without a pre-imported suppression list will all land as subscribed and immediately inflate the customer's Mailchimp contact count and billing tier. We require the customer to provide a full suppression list of unsubscribed and bounced contacts from GENIEE before import, and we import it as a suppression list in Mailchimp first to prevent re-subscribing.

  • GENIEE Workflows and automations do not migrate

GENIEE SFA/CRM Workflows and MA automation sequences are platform-specific automation constructs that have no direct Mailchimp equivalent. GENIEE Workflows use property-triggered conditions and CRM actions within a dual-module AdTech architecture; Mailchimp automations use a different trigger model and builder interface. We do not migrate automations as code. We deliver a written inventory of every active GENIEE Workflow and MA Campaign with its trigger, conditions, and actions for the customer's admin to rebuild in Mailchimp's automation builder post-migration.

Migration approach

Six steps for a successful GENIEE to Mailchimp data migration

  1. Discovery and data dump coordination

We audit the GENIEE SFA/CRM environment for contact volume, custom fields, tags, owner assignments, and attachment references. We identify which GENIEE subsystems are in scope (SFA/CRM contacts and companies; MA campaign metadata) and which are excluded (DSP campaigns, SSP inventory, bid logs). Because GENIEE has no public API, we coordinate with the customer and GENIEE account management to request a bulk data export. We validate encoding (Shift-JIS vs UTF-8) at the export source and plan Japanese-field translation as part of the discovery output.

  2. Japanese field translation and field mapping

We engage Japanese-speaking data engineers to translate GENIEE field labels and identify the English-language equivalents for Mailchimp Merge Fields. We generate a full field map showing each GENIEE field (with Japanese label, English alias if available, data type, and sample value) mapped to a Mailchimp Merge Field name and type. Custom fields that cannot map directly (checkboxes, multi-select, date ranges) are resolved to the closest Mailchimp field type during this step. The field map is reviewed and signed off by the customer before import begins.

  3. Suppression list and deduplication

We require the customer to provide a complete suppression list from GENIEE SFA/CRM: all unsubscribed contacts, bounced contacts, and contacts marked do-not-contact. We import this suppression list into Mailchimp before the main contact migration so that Mailchimp rejects these addresses during import rather than re-subscribing them. We also run deduplication against the main contact list to flag duplicate email addresses across GENIEE records for customer resolution before import.

  4. Mailchimp audience configuration

We configure the destination Mailchimp Audience before import: setting default from-name and from-email, configuring GDPR and CAN-SPAM compliance fields, creating Merge Fields based on the field map, and establishing the initial tag taxonomy based on GENIEE company and owner data. We set up the tag groups that will carry GENIEE Company affiliation and Owner assignment. Tags used for segmentation in GENIEE MA are documented as a reference for Mailchimp segment rebuild.

  5. Contact and company import

We import GENIEE SFA/CRM Contacts into the configured Mailchimp Audience via CSV import with Merge Field mapping. Each contact lands with its email, name fields, translated custom properties as Merge Fields, and tags for Company affiliation and Owner assignment. We import in batches of up to 50,000 records per file, handling rate-limit responses from Mailchimp's import API with retry logic. Each batch emits a reconciliation count before the next begins.

  6. Cutover, validation, and automation rebuild handoff

We run a final delta migration of any contacts modified during the migration window, then disable write access to the GENIEE SFA/CRM contact module pending customer confirmation. We validate imported record counts against the GENIEE export manifest and spot-check 25-50 records against source values. We deliver the Workflow and MA Campaign inventory document to the customer's admin team with a recommended Mailchimp automation rebuild guide. We support a one-week hypercare window for reconciliation issues. We do not rebuild GENIEE Workflows as Mailchimp automations inside the migration scope.

Most migrations land between two and three weeks for accounts under 10,000 Contacts with straightforward CSV exports and English-labeled fields. Migrations above 10,000 Contacts, with multiple GENIEE subsystems to coordinate, or requiring extensive Japanese-field translation extend to four to six weeks. The primary timeline variable is GENIEE account management's ability to generate bulk data dumps on a schedule that supports the migration window. DSP and SSP data does not migrate, which reduces scope compared to full CRM-to-CRM migrations.
