Overview

What this migration involves

Moving from Nielsen Marketing Cloud to Zoho CRM is a fundamental platform-type shift: Nielsen is a data management platform built around audience segments, cross-device identity resolution, and media activation; Zoho CRM is a sales automation platform centered on Leads, Contacts, Accounts, and Deals. Consumer Profiles (Nielsen's unified consumer records) map to Zoho Contacts with audience membership preserved as tag fields or custom picklists. Nielsen Audiences map to either Zoho Campaigns or a custom Audience module depending on whether the customer uses Zoho's marketing layer. Media Plans map to Deals or custom modules with budget and channel fields. The Nielsen Device Graph, covering over 6 billion devices for cross-device identity resolution, is proprietary and cannot be exported. We flag every Consumer Profile record that relied on device graph linkage and advise customers to establish an alternative ID resolution strategy before cutover. Bulk data export from Nielsen relies on structured file outputs (CSV), not a real-time API, which requires chunked rolling-window sequences that we assemble before Zoho's Data Migration Wizard ingest. We do not migrate automations, adaptive learning rules, or workflow configurations; these are documented for the customer's admin to rebuild within Zoho.

Why teams make this switch

Two sides of the same decision

Leaving

Nielsen Marketing Cloud logo

Nielsen Marketing Cloud

What's pushing teams away

  • Pricing is opaque and cited as prohibitively expensive by multiple reviewers, with no free trial available for evaluation before committing.
  • Steep onboarding curve means teams require dedicated training before achieving productive use, which inflates total cost of ownership for smaller organizations.
  • Module-dependent feature coverage means customers may pay for a full license but discover key capabilities like adaptive learning or specific marketing channel support are add-ons.
  • Collaboration features are weak compared to modern martech platforms, making it better suited for individual analyst workflows than team-based campaign management.
  • The platform is not designed for lean teams or SMBs — it targets medium to large enterprises, leaving smaller marketers underserved and overcharged.

Choosing

Zoho CRM logo

Zoho CRM

What's pulling them in

  • Free tier is genuinely usable for up to 3 users with leads, pipeline management, and email tracking — no credit card required, making it easy to evaluate before committing.
  • Pricing undercuts Salesforce by 80–90% at equivalent feature tiers, with Enterprise plans offering capabilities that cost 3–4× more on competing platforms.
  • Deep ecosystem of 45+ integrated apps (Books, Desk, Creator, Campaigns) means companies already in the Zoho suite get native integrations without third-party connectors.
  • Highly customizable: custom modules, custom fields, Canvas drag-and-drop layouts, and Blueprint workflow automation without requiring developer resources.
  • Small-business reviewers highlight real-time team visibility, daily time savings of 60–90 minutes, and the ability to mold the CRM to any industry vertical.

Object mapping

How Nielsen Marketing Cloud objects map to Zoho CRM

Each row shows how a Nielsen Marketing Cloud object lands in Zoho CRM, including any object-level transformations, lookup resolution, or schema-design dependencies.

Typical mapping — final map is confirmed during the sample migration step.

Nielsen Marketing Cloud

Consumer Profiles

maps to

Zoho CRM

Contact

1:1
Mapping required

Nielsen Consumer Profiles represent unified individual records built from first-party, second-party, and third-party data sources with device graph linkage. Consumer Profiles migrate to Zoho CRM Contacts as the primary CRM equivalent. We preserve the original Nielsen profile ID in a custom field nielsen_profile_id__c for audit traceability. Any device graph linkage metadata is flagged as non-portable and documented separately for the customer to address with an alternative ID resolution strategy (clean-room partnership or probabilistic ID solution). Email, phone, name, and address fields map directly to Zoho Contact standard fields.

Nielsen Marketing Cloud

Audiences

maps to

Zoho CRM

Campaign or Custom Module

1:many
Fully supported

Nielsen Audiences are segment definitions built from data source rules and stored with associated metadata. We offer two migration paths: for customers using Zoho Campaigns, Audiences map to Zoho Campaigns with segment membership criteria preserved in custom fields or notes. For customers not using Zoho marketing, we create a custom Audience module with segment name, definition logic (as text notes), size estimate, and status. The customer's admin decides the target during scoping. Audience membership rules (the criteria that define who belongs to an audience) do not automate in Zoho; we document the logic so the admin can rebuild as Zoho workflow criteria if needed.

Nielsen Marketing Cloud

Campaigns

maps to

Zoho CRM

Deals

1:1
Fully supported

Nielsen Campaigns represent activated audience segments sent across marketing channels with targeting criteria, channel assignments, and scheduling data. These map to Zoho CRM Deals with campaign name, stage (Active, Paused, Completed mapped to Zoho Deal stages), and owner preserved. Channel assignments (email, display, social) migrate as custom fields. Campaign budget data maps to Deal Amount or custom currency fields. If the customer uses Zoho Campaigns, we can alternatively map Nielsen Campaigns to Zoho Campaigns depending on whether the customer treats them as marketing records or sales pipeline records.

Nielsen Marketing Cloud

Media Plans

maps to

Zoho CRM

Deals (custom fields)

lossy
Mapping required

Nielsen Media Plans define channel strategy, budget allocation, and scheduling for audience activation. We preserve Media Plan records as Zoho CRM Deals with custom fields for Channel (display, search, social, email), Budget Amount, Start Date, End Date, and Audience Link (lookup to the related Audience or Campaign record). Cross-platform budget allocation percentages migrate as custom fields. If the customer has multi-channel media plans with complex budget splits, we may recommend a custom Media Plan module to avoid overloading the standard Deal object.

Nielsen Marketing Cloud

Data Sources

maps to

Zoho CRM

Custom Module (DataSources_C)

1:1
Fully supported

Nielsen Data Sources represent ingest connections for first-party, second-party, and third-party data. We create a custom Data Sources module in Zoho CRM (using the _C naming convention that Zoho's Data Migration Wizard recognizes for auto-module creation) and migrate source configuration metadata including source name, type (first-party, second-party, third-party), connection status, last sync date, and record volume. This is a reference module rather than an operational one; it documents where audience data originated without creating CRM workflows dependent on it.

Nielsen Marketing Cloud

Reports and Analytics

maps to

Zoho CRM

Reports (structure only)

1:1
Mapping required

Nielsen Reports and analytics exports include pre-built dashboards, custom report definitions, and historical campaign performance metrics. We export the report structure (report name, filters, metrics, date ranges) and available data fields. Zoho Reports are rebuilt in Zoho Analytics (or Zoho CRM's built-in reporting) post-migration. Historical campaign performance numbers (impressions, clicks, conversions) migrate to a custom Campaign Performance module as read-only historical records. Dashboards cannot be migrated as layout code; we deliver a written dashboard map with the recommended Zoho Analytics widget layout for the customer's admin to configure.

Nielsen Marketing Cloud

Content Assets

maps to

Zoho CRM

Attachments and Notes

1:1
Mapping required

Nielsen Content Assets include creative files, email templates, and messaging content stored within the platform. We export available content assets in bulk via structured file export and attach them to the relevant Zoho CRM records (Contacts, Accounts, or Deals) using Zoho's file attachment API. Asset metadata (filename, type, created date, content type) migrates as Zoho Notes or custom fields. Large binary assets (video creatives, high-resolution images) may exceed Zoho's file attachment limits and require alternative storage (Zoho Drive or an external CDN) with a link stored in the CRM record.

Nielsen Marketing Cloud

Users and Roles

maps to

Zoho CRM

Users

1:1
Mapping required

Nielsen user accounts with assigned roles, permissions, and data access scopes export as a user directory. We map Nielsen permission profiles to Zoho CRM role model, preserving the role name and privilege hierarchy. Granular field-level access permissions do not map directly because Zoho's role model uses module-level access rather than field-level per object. Users without matching Zoho accounts go to a reconciliation queue for the customer's admin to provision before record import resumes.

Nielsen Marketing Cloud

Device Graph

maps to

Zoho CRM

None

1:1
Not supported

Nielsen maintains a device graph covering over 6 billion devices for cross-device identity resolution. This graph is proprietary and contractually restricted from export. It cannot be migrated to Zoho CRM or any alternative platform. Every Consumer Profile record that relied on device graph linkage is flagged in the migration output with a recommendation to establish an alternative ID resolution strategy (probabilistic ID solution, clean-room partnership, or first-party ID graph) before cutover. Failure to address this results in silent identity fragmentation in the destination CRM.

Nielsen Marketing Cloud

Engagements (Campaign Interactions)

maps to

Zoho CRM

Tasks and Events

1:many
Fully supported

Nielsen engagement records (email opens, clicks, site visits, impressions) that are stored as structured interaction data on Consumer Profiles migrate to Zoho CRM as Tasks (for discrete actions like email click) or Notes (for summary interaction records). We aggregate high-frequency interaction data (multiple impressions per day) into daily summary records to avoid creating thousands of individual Task entries that would overwhelm Zoho's activity timeline. Engagement attribution data (which audience segment triggered an interaction) migrates to a custom interaction summary field on the Contact.

Pair-specific challenges

  • Nielsen device graph and third-party enrichment are non-portable

Nielsen's device graph covering 6 billion devices and its third-party data enrichment layers are entirely proprietary and contractually restricted from export. When migrating to Zoho CRM, we cannot replicate the cross-device identity resolution that Nielsen provides. We flag every Consumer Profile record that relied on device graph linkage and advise customers to establish an alternative ID resolution strategy (clean-room partnership, probabilistic ID solution, or first-party device graph) before cutover to avoid silent identity fragmentation in the Zoho CRM Contacts. This is not a technical limitation of Zoho CRM but a fundamental capability gap between DMP and CRM platforms.

  • Audience segment logic does not automate in Zoho CRM

Nielsen Audiences are built from rules-based segment definitions combining data sources, behavioral signals, and third-party attributes. Zoho CRM does not have a DMP-layer segment builder. The audience membership criteria do not migrate as executable rules. We document the segment definition logic in a written segment inventory and recommend rebuilding as Zoho workflow criteria or Zoho Marketing Automation rules post-migration. Customers expecting automated audience maintenance in Zoho CRM from migrated segments will need to invest in rebuilding the logic manually or using Zoho's marketing add-ons.

  • Bulk export from Nielsen uses file-based outputs only

Nielsen Marketing Cloud's data export capability uses structured file outputs (CSV) rather than a real-time streaming API. Large audience datasets and historical campaign data require chunked export sequences that we assemble before loading into Zoho. We sequence exports in rolling time windows to avoid timeout errors and validate record counts at each step. Zoho's Data Migration Wizard accepts CSV and XLSX files up to 5 GB per file with a 25 GB total limit, which accommodates most Nielsen export packages. Large files may require splitting and incremental load sequences.

  • Zoho's custom field limit constrains complex data models

Zoho CRM edition limits the number of custom fields per module (Standard: 5 custom fields per module, Professional: 25, Enterprise: 50, Ultimate: 75). Nielsen's Consumer Profiles and Audiences often carry 20-50+ attributes. If the migration scope requires preserving all Nielsen fields, the customer must be on Zoho CRM Enterprise ($40/user/mo) or Ultimate ($52/user/mo). We audit the customer's active field count per object during discovery and recommend the appropriate Zoho edition before migration begins.

  • Automations, adaptive learning, and workflows do not migrate

Nielsen's AI-driven adaptive learning for segment optimization and campaign tuning is a proprietary platform feature that does not export or replicate in Zoho CRM. Similarly, Nielsen workflow configurations (audience refresh schedules, automated data source syncs, campaign pacing rules) have no direct Zoho CRM equivalent. We deliver a written inventory of every active Nielsen automation with its configuration and a recommended Zoho Blueprint or Command Center equivalent. The customer's admin rebuilds these post-migration as a separate configuration engagement.

Migration approach

Six steps for a successful Nielsen Marketing Cloud to Zoho CRM data migration

  1. Discovery and Zoho edition selection

We audit the source Nielsen Marketing Cloud portal across active modules (base platform vs. add-on modules), Consumer Profile volume, Audience count, Campaign count, historical engagement data volume, data source configurations, and any custom field count per object. We pair this with a Zoho CRM edition decision: Standard ($14/user) covers basic contact and deal migrations; Professional ($23/user) adds workflow rules and custom fields; Enterprise ($40/user) is required if the customer needs more than 25 custom fields per module or complex pipeline configurations; Ultimate ($52/user) only if advanced AI (Zia prediction builder) and 75 custom fields are required. The discovery output is a written migration scope, a Zoho edition recommendation, and a pre-flight list of data quality issues to address before migration.

  2. Data export sequencing from Nielsen

We extract data from Nielsen Marketing Cloud in dependency order using structured file exports (CSV). Consumer Profiles export first with all standard and custom attributes. Audiences export next with segment definition logic preserved as text notes. Campaigns and Media Plans export with linked audience references. Data Source metadata and User directory export last. We chunk large exports in rolling time windows to avoid timeout errors and validate record counts against Nielsen's internal record totals at each step before assembling the final load files. Device graph linkage data is extracted as a separate reference file and flagged as non-portable.

  3. Schema design and field mapping for Zoho

We design the destination schema in Zoho CRM. This includes creating custom modules for Audiences and Data Sources (using the _C naming convention), custom fields on Contact for audience membership tags and Nielsen profile ID, custom fields on Deal for media plan metadata (channel, budget, audience link), and custom fields for campaign performance history. We map Nielsen field types to Zoho field types (date fields, currency fields, picklists, multi-select picklists, lookup relationships) and document the mapping in a written field map. Zoho edition is confirmed at this stage to ensure custom field limits are not exceeded.

  4. Data transformation and deduplication

We transform Nielsen data to Zoho CRM format. Consumer Profiles with device graph linkage are flagged with a custom non-portable indicator. Audiences are mapped to either Zoho Campaigns or the custom Audience module per the customer's scoping decision. Nielsen Campaigns map to Zoho Deals with channel and budget fields. High-frequency engagement records are aggregated into daily summaries. Duplicate Consumer Profiles (same email or phone) are identified and flagged for the customer's admin to resolve before load. The transformation output is a set of clean CSV/XLSX files ready for Zoho's Data Migration Wizard.

  5. Sandbox migration and reconciliation

We run a full migration into a Zoho CRM Sandbox or a staging environment using production-like data volume. The customer's operations lead reconciles record counts (Contacts in, Campaigns/Deals in, custom module records in), spot-checks 25-50 random records against the Nielsen source data, and validates audience membership accuracy and campaign metadata completeness. Any mapping corrections or data quality issues are resolved here before the production migration. Zoho's Data Migration Wizard is used for the load with field mapping validated at each module step.

  6. Production migration and cutover

We run production migration in record-dependency order: Users (manual provisioning validated), Contacts (with audience tags and Nielsen profile ID preserved), custom modules (Data Sources, Audiences), Deals (mapped from Campaigns and Media Plans), and engagement summaries. Each phase emits a row-count reconciliation report before the next phase begins. We freeze Nielsen writes during cutover and run a final delta migration of any records modified during the migration window. We deliver the automation and segment inventory document to the customer's admin team for post-migration rebuild in Zoho Blueprint and Command Center.

Platform deep dives

Context on both ends of the pair

Nielsen Marketing Cloud logo

Nielsen Marketing Cloud

Source

Strengths

  • Nielsen's media measurement brand authority lends cross-device audience data inherent credibility with media agencies and brand advertisers.
  • Integrated DMP plus analytics plus activation workflow eliminates the need for multiple point solutions in the enterprise martech stack.
  • Third-party data enrichment breadth is wider than most competitors, covering offline, mobile, and streaming behavioral signals.
  • AI-powered recommendations for segment optimization and campaign tuning are cited as genuine workflow accelerators.
  • Real-time campaign analytics with built-in attribution give immediate visibility without waiting for post-campaign reporting.

Weaknesses

  • Opaque pricing with no free trial creates high evaluation friction and locks out budget-conscious teams before they can validate fit.
  • Steep learning curve requires dedicated training investment that inflates time-to-value for smaller marketing teams.
  • Module-dependent feature gating means customers may pay full license costs but still face capability gaps in specific channels.
  • Collaboration features are underdeveloped compared to modern cloud platforms, limiting effectiveness for team-based campaign workflows.
  • Device graph and third-party data enrichment are proprietary and non-portable, creating meaningful vendor lock-in.

Strengths

  • Generous free tier (3 users) with real CRM functionality — no artificial feature restrictions that prevent valid use cases.
  • Per-seat pricing is transparent and predictable; no contact-based billing surprises that inflate monthly invoices.
  • Blueprint visual workflow builder lets sales ops teams automate stage progressions without developer involvement.
  • Canvas drag-and-drop layout editor lets non-technical users customize module views and forms per role.
  • Active development cadence: API v8 is well-documented, supports bulk endpoints, and COQL queries handle complex filtering.

Weaknesses

  • Poor support quality and inconsistent SLA — Enterprise tier requires 50+ user minimum for Priority Phone support.
  • Daily export limits in the UI vary by plan tier, making large dataset extraction slow and planning-dependent.
  • Zia AI features are gated behind $40+/user Enterprise tier, not available to most SMB customers who chose Zoho for cost savings.
  • User-reported occasional UI inconsistencies and performance slowdowns on large datasets with many custom fields.
  • No EU-hosted option limits appeal for GDPR-sensitive companies; some competitors offer data residency guarantees Zoho does not.
